Samantha Claman headshot Q:  Where do you attend school and what type of design work would you like to pursue?

A:  I am a fourth year architecture student at Iowa State University. I'm interested in healthcare design, however, I'm still exploring the opportunities other types of design present.

Q:  Why did you choose the design/construction field?

A:  I have always had a passion for design and I'm a detail oriented person. I'm less interested in the finished product and more so the process of design and how a building is constructed.

Q:  What motivates you to work towards a career in design/construction?

A:  Architecture is permanent and has a direct impact on people. I'm motivated by the idea that I'll be able to design a space that will hopefully provide an immediate positive reaction, but can be enjoyed for many years.

Q:  What is the best advice you have received?

A:  Be flexible and don't get attached to your first design. It's easy for me to become attached to the first draft of my design, especially after I've put a lot of hours into it. Design is a process, and by embracing restrictions and being open to new ideas, I've been able to take my studio projects further than I thought possible.

Q:  How has Iowa Women in Architecture influenced you?

A:  iaWia has given me the opportunity to connect with and directly learn from professionals. Through these connections I have gained more confidence in approaching and conversing with professionals, as well as gain insight into practice.
