Iowa State University

Architecture Student

1. Why did you choose the design/construction field?

Art and problem solving have been interests of mine, even from a young age. In addition, I have always wanted to be able to positively impact the everyday lives of people within a community and foster community among individuals. Architecture is all about creating spaces for people that do just that.

2. What is the most unusual medium you have used for a model, and what did it represent?

I once used soap for a model. The intent of the piece was to address how weathering changes the form over time.

3. What has been your favorite studio trip so far?

My favorite studio trip so far was to Seattle, Washington. We visited all kinds of museums, which are some of my favorite spaces to explore. We also visited 12+ potential sites for our project and then were able to pick which one we thought best fit the brief. It was a different side of architectural analysis that I had not experienced previously.

4. What is the best advice you have received from a professor or mentor?

Some of the best advice I have received is that I should explore interests I have even if they are not directly related to architecture. Everything I am passionate about can influence the way I think about design, people and spaces.

5. How has Iowa Women in Architecture influenced you?

Iowa Women in Architecture has allowed me to be surrounded by great role models within the profession. Not only other students but professionals as well. It has shown me that I should be proud to be a woman pursuing my interests and taking my future seriously.

S.K.S.L8 Context
