Where do you attend school?

I attend Iowa State University, studying as a fourth-year student pursing a Bachelor of Architecture.

 

Why did you choose the design/construction field?

I chose architecture because I have always been interested in how things are constructed and put together. In high school, I learned multiple hand and computer drafting techniques which sparked my interest in the field of design and more specifically architecture.

 

What motivates you to work towards a career in design/construction?

I have become very interested in the process of making through technology. This past year I have assisted with research using Ceramic 3D printing, which has lead me to become more interested in the fabrication aspects of design. I am always very eager to learn new techniques or tools for fabrication as they are continuously improving and changing, which makes this aspect of the field of architecture very exciting.

 

What is the best advice you have received?

"A project is never finished. No matter how bad or good your last review went, your project is continuously evolving." - Alonso L. Ortega

 

How has Iowa Women in Architecture influenced you?

I currently serve as the Vice President for the Student Chapter on campus. This position has given me the opportunity to connect with women peers and professionals in Central Iowa.

American Business Women's Association Scholarships

The American Business Women's Association have expanded scholarship offerings to include:

*   One $1000 scholarship for incoming college freshman and freshman / sophomores at trade school institutions or community colleges.

*   Two $2000 scholarships for college sophomores and above (including graduate school, medical school, vet med etc.)

Where do you attend school and what type of design work would you like to pursue?  I attend school at Iowa State University. I have not decided what type of design work I would like to pursue, but I am interested in Architects Without Borders and Architecture for Humanity.  Also, later in my career, I would like to combine practice with teaching.

Why did you choose the design/construction field?  In high school, I took a few drafting courses and became interested in architecture and design.

 

What motivates you to work towards a career in design/construction?  My motivation is from my interest in the dialogue that architecture produces through both its history, progress and its role in the future. Also, I believe that good design can have a positive impact on the human experience.

 

​What is the best advice you have received?  Do not make decisions when you are angry or tired.

 

How has Iowa Women in Architecture influenced you?  Iowa Women in Architecture has introduced me to and helped me to making connections with other design students and professionals. The mentor program has helped me to get an idea of what working in a firm could be like. It has also allowed me to better understand some of the issues that impact women in the field of architecture.

1. Where do you attend school and what type of design work would you like to pursue?

I am a fourth year architecture student at Iowa State University. I would like to pursue architecture work at a non-traditional firm that values innovation and sustainable design.

2. Why did you choose the design/construction field?

I chose the design field because I always enjoyed art and design classes when I was younger. In high school I took an interior design class which allowed me to discover my interest in buildings and architecture.

3. What motivates you to work towards a career in design/construction?

I am motivated by the opportunity to create spaces that improve the lives of people. I believe that the way a space is designed can change the way people work and feel.

4. What is the best advice you have received?

If you have a crazy idea, run with it because innovation does not come from recreating the same ideas.

5. How has Iowa Women in Architecture influenced you?

Iowa Women in Architecture has shown me that there are many students as well as professionals that strive to empower women across all design fields. It has also allowed me to make connections and expand my network with professionals that share these values.

  1. Where do you attend school and what type of design work would you like to pursue?

I am currently a fifth-year student in the Professional Architecture program at Iowa State University. After graduation, I plan to pursue sustainable architecture, either by joining a non-traditional firm, attending Earthship Biotecture Academy, or joining the Peace Corps.

  1. Why did you choose the design/construction field?

My father is an electrician who works almost exclusively in the agriculture industry, and as a child, I always loved going out to the pig barns with him and figuring out how things went together. My favorite days were when it was warm enough for my little brother and me to build our own child-sized structures with leftover material laying around the sites.

  1. What motivates you to work towards a career in design/construction?

I am motivated by the fact that designers are constantly working to combine technology and human creativity to create spaces that positively influence their users while still preserving and bettering the environment.

  1. What is the best advice you have received?

When it comes to the design process, there is no such thing as a mistake or a stupid idea, just a need for refinement.

  1. How has Iowa Women in Architecture influenced you?

Iowa Women in Architecture has showed me that there are many people, both women and men, who share my goal to empower women in all design fields. It has also helped me to make connections in the field of landscape architecture, which will play a big role in my future career goals.

Female college students can apply to UI leadership institute

Enrollment is open for the University of Iowa Women's Resource and Action Center's ninth annual Iowa N.E.W. Leadership Institute, an intensive, nonpartisan institute designed to empower women across the political spectrum and increase the participation of underrepresented groups in the public sector. The free statewide program brings in nearly 50 Iowa speakers, including elected officials and nonprofit executives. The institute will be held May 23-27. Women enrolled in any post-secondary academic institution in Iowa, female Iowa residents attending college outside the state and female graduate students should apply by Feb. 16.
