Panel Event

February 4th

As designers, we know that a strong, growing region needs a healthy city center in order to thrive. For many residents of neighborhoods in the capital core of Des Moines, there are gaps in opportunity, access, and security. Many of these inequalities tie back to the use of redlining maps from the mid-1900s that created urban plans that segregated communities, further instilling racism and inequality in our cities.
Iowa Women in Architecture is excited to have a thoughtful conversation about the impact of redlining, the current state of urban core communities, how they impact Greater Des Moines, and opportunities for designers to be part of the solution. Please join us for a virtual panel event aimed to help IAWIA support our vision of empowering our members through education and recognition and ensuring a sustainable future for all women involved in all aspects of the built environment.

November 19th - 8:30AM - 12:30 PM

Speaker:
Elizabeth Suárez

Description:
Does that little voice inside you say Be happy with what you have, don’t get pushy! or Times are tough…I can’t ask now.

The reality is many women have a hard time asking—and negotiating for their career and themselves. In fact, research shows that 20% of women never negotiate at all. Don’t leave money, a promotion, or your own personal happiness on the table. Join Elizabeth Suárez, a leadership, and negotiation strategist, for a powerful session on negotiation fundamentals. She’ll walk through her Negotiation Unleashed System, diving deep into three essential negotiation tips you can implement immediately to accomplish your goals. You’ll leave this session feeling prepared, confident, and excited to negotiate for everything you want in business and in life.

Learning Objectives:
1) Become a stronger negotiator by implementing a straightforward process that keeps you focused on your desired outcome.

2) Discover and see how a networking approach builds your negotiation skills.

3) Explore effective self-advocacy strategies that will complement your newly acquired negotiation and networking skills.

Culturally Responsive Communication: An Imperative in the 21st Century

Speakers:
Dr. Rick Salas serves as the Chief Diversity Officer at Des Moines University and is also an Assistant Professor for the Behavioral Medicine and Bioethics department. DMU is a graduate-level and private medical/health sciences school located in Des Moines, Iowa.  In this important role, Dr. Salas is responsible for diversity and inclusion programming and provides students/faculty/staff training in the area of cultural competency/humility. Additionally, Dr. Salas has a long list of responsibilities that include building capacity in the area of strategic diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, campus climate, collaboration with community groups, universities, and businesses. He also serves as a faculty advisor for several DMU student clubs.  Rich earned his Master’s degree in Human Resources and Ph.D. in Educational Leadership at Colorado State University. Dr. Salas is only a handful of individuals who have completed levels I, II, and III of the Intercultural Awareness training offered through the Rocky Mountain Intercultural Institute. Furthermore, Dr. Salas is certified as a Master level facilitator of the Diversity Health Series developed by Kaiser Permanente.

Tom Newkirk attended Drake University and graduated from Drake Law School in 1989. He is presently the founding partner in Newkirk Zwagerman and has been a civil rights attorney practicing in Iowa for more than 30 years representing hundreds of persons of color and women harmed by discrimination. During the last 20 years, Tom has devoted significant time to educating himself on implicit bias and developing methods to reduce bias as a risk in employment, the legal and medical professions, and in civil and criminal justice. In 2003, Tom was one of the few lawyers in the United States invited by the inventors of the Implicit Association Test to join a group of social scientists, law professors, authors, and advocates at the first symposium on introducing implicit bias to the legal profession. Since then Tom continued to advance his understanding of implicit bias and its harmful effects, and also maintained contact with the top social scientists in the United States working to identify and advance methods to reduce bias as a risk to equality.

Description:
The rapidly changing demographics of the United States and the changing demographics taking place in our respective communities requires us to be proactive in facilitating respectful conversations as well as business situations that will challenge us to examine our own implicit biases and stereotypes. There is increasingly overwhelming scientific evidence for the effect of implicit bias and cultural factors on all aspects of life and human interactions. While at times, our own preconceived notions of the "Other" may create problems, there are things that can be done to reduce this as a risk. Education and awareness are important first steps in this ongoing process. Facilitated by Dr. Rich Salas and Attorney AND implicit Bias expert, Tom Newkirk, the workshop will engage and provide participants with information that focuses on how they can improve the delivery of culturally responsive communication.

Learning Objectives:
1) Gain a better understanding of the dangers of forming stereotypes and how our biases may affect communication, relationships, and overall interactions with people.

2) Demonstrate an understanding of the Intercultural Awareness Stretch Model.

3) Gain a better understanding of what "Culture" is and how it manifests itself in our personal and professional lives.

4) Provide a safe forum to learn and be engaged in dialogue to learn from one another.
