1. What is the most exciting and energizing aspect of your current position?

I am continually energized by the dynamic nature of the profession and how it plays out in the day-to-day responsibilities of my position. I learn something new each day and love that each project I have worked on has brought with it different design strategies to respond thoughtfully to varying contexts, programs, and user needs.

2. What was the last interesting podcast you listened to?

I don’t listen to podcasts often, but I do enjoy reading. Lifescale by Brian Solis is a book that has recently opened my perspective about self-discovery and creative growth. It can be super easy to get distracted by our phones/technology and this book taps into ways to become more mindful and productive.

3. What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?

The answer seems so simple, but I am proud to be in my current position in a fresh new city surrounding. Graduating during the initial impact of the pandemic taught me patience, resilience, and gratitude, and I am thankful for the opportunities I have been given so far and the supportive team at Substance that have helped me grow since starting this new chapter.

4. What advice would you give to the next generation of female leaders?

Remain adaptable and open to new challenges and bring your passion and strengths to each new experience you encounter.

5. We are Iowa Women in Architecture; who were the female role models that inspired you?

My mother and two sisters-in-law – Lindsey and Megan – are three women that inspire and support me through all my endeavors. They demonstrate humility, empathy, and positivity and I hope to bring these qualities not only to the profession but to all the relationships I build with others.

This multi-purpose community wellness center also serves as a formal and informal gathering space for community groups and residents in Mount Vernon. At level one, a large lobby and cafe welcome patrons with seating for casual conversation and access to a community room. Two courts and a multipurpose space can be used for practices concurrently or combined into one space for tournaments. An upper-level track encircles the gym with views to the exterior at every corner connecting patrons to the exterior and allowing direct access to the fitness and weights areas.

Shelby Klooster

RDG Planning + Design

Lighting Designer

1. What is the most exciting and energizing aspect of your current position?

The level of integration we get to have during and after construction to ensure a space is performing appropriately and is adhering to the expectations of the architect/owner. We make beautiful places, even if it means getting on a ladder to make adjustments ourselves; I love the level of involvement I get to have in the final product.

2. What was the last interesting podcast you listened to?

BitCoin; I can’t remember the name but the scandals and development around electronic currencies are fascinating. I was actually a victim of listening to this on a recent road trip with my boyfriend. I don’t usually listen to podcasts but this one was definitely one of the more interesting I’ve heard in my limited experience.

3. What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?

WILDesMoines definitely. I wasn’t looking to make large splashes right after moving to Iowa, but after some encouragement from the national chapter of Women In Lighting Design (WILD) I was convinced of the need for some local representation and comradery. We have really blossomed since our start in 2019 and I am so proud of how far we’ve come. I also can’t wait to see where we go next!

4. What advice would you give to the next generation of female leaders?

Stay true to your ideals and don’t be afraid to speak up. Oftentimes, especially when you are young, it can feel out of place to stand your ground or have an opinion in a room of perceived experts, but I have found that sometimes the newest faces bring the freshest perspective. It’s important to know your value and share your worth with others at the table; growth can only happen when there is collaborative engagement.

5. We are Iowa Women in Architecture; who were the female role models that inspired you?

My mom is probably the strongest woman I know, and she inspires me every day to work hard and speak up. I am fortunate to have many strong female leaders in my life, from my time in Philadelphia to my fellow female colleagues at RDG, and not to forget the fabulous women who help lead WILD here in Iowa. They all are all role models for me and remind me that strong female leadership comes in many forms.

OPN Architects

Intern Architect

1. What is the most exciting and energizing aspect of your current position?

The fact that I am able to learn new things every single day from my peers and other experts in the field. I am capable of problem-solving, bringing people together, and improving communities through creative and innovative solutions

2. What was the last interesting podcast you listened to?

I am an avid podcast listener and there are so many that I love. My favorite ones would have to be Armchair Expert, Dr. Death, My Favorite Murder, and Dateline. One of the most inspiring ones I listened to recently have been "We are supported by... Oprah Winfrey" and "We are supported by...Malala Yousafzai"

3. What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?

I am extremely proud of where I am in my career with a little over a year out of school and simultaneously, I am delighted to be part of a team that constantly evolves, listens, and values their employees.

4. What advice would you give to the next generation of female leaders?

Don’t be afraid to speak up and make mistakes.

5. We are Iowa Women in Architecture; who were the female role models that inspired you?

My role models are my mother and my late grandmother. My mother’s patience, fearlessness, and positive attitude inspire me to do better every day, while my grandmothers’ stubbornness, determination, and strength taught me that giving up is never an option. I get my best qualities from them and my humor from my dad, but shhh, don’t tell him that.
